Agile on DZone

July 12, 2008 by Artem

As you might have noticed above every post on this site there is was a "digg this" icon. Apparently, digg is not the best aggregator for the sites that don't cover gadgets, politics or Linux. So I decided to replace it with "Submit/vote on DZone"  widget. DZone is a digg-like site, where you can submit and vote on the links relevant to developers. Dzone seems to be quite relevant for this site as our post manage to come to the DZone's front page quite regularly.

Participating on the social aggregator, where people actually vote helps seeing what kind of articles you tend to like or not to like. Therefore it would be very kind of you to click  on the DZone widget to vote up whenever you like the article and to vote down whenever you don't like one.

P.S.
I implemented the DZone support in a custom Drupal module. And at some point will probably release it to the wild. If you happen to be a seasoned Drupal developer, who would like to take such module under maintenance/ownership, please, let me know.

Welcome! Please don't hesitate to let me know if you need anything regarding the widget or if you have suggestions. I'm always available via matt at dzone.com.

Thanks, Matt. Everything is

Thanks, Matt. Everything is fine so far. Though naturally, I'd prefer the DZone team to create single-click modules for Drupal, Wordpress, Django, etc, etc instead of creating one myself :)

Nice job and a port to Wordpress?

Hi,

You have done a nice job creating a Drupal module to add DZone widgets to the posts. If you have released the source code to the public I wonder if anyone wants to take up porting it to Wordpress and other popular platforms?

Will release to public

I will definitely release the code to the public. There are only two things needed for it:
1. Some code cleanup, adding cudos to the work I was basing upon (diggthis module if you wonder)
2. Somebody has to care about this module at least a bit, submit it to the drupal.org, etc

Doing 1 is of no problem, but finding somebody to care about a module even a bit can be problematic. Whenever a person interested in maintaining is found (maybe DZone guys? ;)), I'll release the module immediately. If such a person is not found, well, I guess some time in the Autumn, I'll just publish the code right on this web site.

As for porting to Wordpress, I guess it is simpler to create a wordpress plug-in from scratch. It is the simplest possible module - it just adds a bit of HTML with couple of parameters (url, teaser text) to every article.
